(Dan Tri) – The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that the United States is at risk of becoming the global epicenter of the Covid-19 epidemic as the number of infections in this country increases rapidly.

The number of cases and deaths from Covid-19 in the US began to increase rapidly.

Reuters quoted WHO spokeswoman, Ms. Margaret Harris, at a press conference held today, March 24, saying that in the past 24 hours, 85% of new Covid-19 cases in the world were in the US and Europe.

Specifically, on March 23, the US recorded more than 10,000 more cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of infected people here to more than 43,000 cases, while the number of deaths was 530.

The WHO representative said that the US may soon fall into a situation where the number of infections increases sharply like European countries.

However, Ms. Harris also pointed out some positive signs in the epidemic response in the US such as expanding testing capacity, efforts to isolate patients and trace people at risk of exposure.

The above comments were made after data collected by WHO showed that the Covid-19 epidemic had spread throughout the world, causing about 335,000 infections and nearly 15,000 deaths.

Europe is the center of the global Covid-19 epidemic with a series of hot spots such as Italy and Spain.

According to WHO data, as of March 22, the death rate in Italy was more than 9%.

Answering the question of whether Italy has reached the peak of the epidemic, Ms. Harris said: `There is a ray of hope there.

At the press conference, the WHO representative also expressed concern that the Covid-19 epidemic would break out in countries with weaker health systems such as in Africa.
